How do you choose the books you want to read? Many ask friends for suggestions or look at the latest best-selling list and book reviews. Publishers know this and constantly watch for book titles that people are reviewing and recommending to friends.

Publishers check our Amazon.com starred reviews, Goodreads.com, Barnsandnoble.com, and publishing webpages.

If you’ve read my debut novel or have it on your summer to-read list, could you take a few minutes and post a review. I’d love to hear your thoughts, and so would my publisher.

Book reviews don’t have to be intimidating. Kelly Gallucci offers a few tips on writing a stressless review.

  • Ratings (stars) are easy and help to give readers an immediate sense of how you felt about a book.
  • Include a short review of what the book was about (you can use the plot outline of the book cover as a guide). Focus on what you felt strongly about and what you think others would want to be aware of.
  • Don’t spoil the plot by revealing the ending, the villain, a plot twist, or a surprise element.
  • “As you describe the plot, share your opinion on the things that worked (or didn’t) when it came to the characters and events of the book. Tell readers why they should (or shouldn’t) pick this book up.”
  • The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires readers to disclose if they received a review copy of a book.
